The ambition of the institute is to improve materials properties by the correlation of their microstructure and mechanical behaviour at high temperatures, cyclic loading, creep or tribology. Our research focuses on metals but also other materials like thermal barrier coatings or biomaterials are investigated. For this, several devices to measure the mechanical properties from the macroscopic to the nanometer scale, as well as different microscopes are available. Furthermore, simulations of defects (e.g. of dislocations) provide a better  understanding of material properties.
