Metallography and sample preparation

A well-equipped metallography is needed to prepare samples for microstructural analysis. Here, WWI covers the entire range from sampling, coarse and fine grinding equipment to a wide variety of mechanical and electrolytic polishing processes. Further, there are corresponding facilities for the preparation of TEM and APT specimens.

In the field of macroscopic specimen fabrication, a micro-milling machine is available for the production of miniature specimens. Furthermore, the institute operates its own mechanical workshop and has access to the mechanical workshop of the Faculty of Engineering.

  • cutting machines (2x precision, 2x coarse, 1x low-speed, 2x wire saw)
  • grinding machines
  • polishing machines (2x semi-automatic, 4x manual)
  • vibrapolishing machines (2x)
  • electrolytic polishing facilities (1x macroscopic specimens, 1x TEM specimen dilution, 1x APT tips)
  • chemical etching stations
