The 49th Retreat Symposium of the MSEI was held again this year from October 4-6, 2023, at the picturesque Sattelbogener Hof in the charming Upper Palatinate. The annual symposium, which features excellent English-language presentations by PhD students and contributions by external experts, has the character of an international conference. However, it also provides a unique opportunity for community and get-together each year.

This year we were honored to welcome two special external guests: Mr. Johannes Möller (former MSEI) from Schaeffler AG and Prof. Michael Mills from Ohio State University accompanied by his wife Cecilia Mills. Mr. Möller contributed to the event with a presentation on “Materials and Digitalization as Key Factors for Successful Decarbonization”, while on Thursday evening Mr. Mills gave an overview of new developments in the field of oxide dispersion strengthening of alloys by using additive manufacturing to introduce the highly stable oxides.

Of course, as every year, there were many opportunities for social evening events and a perfectly planned walking excursion.

Our heartfelt thanks goes to the Mitterbiller family as well as our esteemed guests Mike and Cecilia Mills and Johannes Möller. It was a pleasure to have you with us and among us! Many thanks also to the organizing committee!
